In The Club House

Slow Play Is Killing Our Game. Here’s Why:

Etiquette #1:

I Still Cannot Believe That There Are Golfers who have no idea about the etiquette of the game. Time after time, my regular foursome is forced to wait on every shot while the group ahead of us hunts for their balls. Invariably, those groups play from the Blue tees and in some instances, from the tips, when they should be playing from the Whites. I’m certain that you all have experienced the same frustration.

Well Folks, I am not going to stand for this poor behavior any longer. The very next time I run into a situation that prohibits me and my friends from playing a round without having to wait on every shot, I will zoom my little buggy right up to the errant group and politely ask that they allow us to pass them. If they refuse, I will kill them.

Etiquette #2.

Standing behind a Player When He Is Ready to Hit a Shot is a poor choice and is annoying. Those of you who watch golf on TV will no doubt know what I am referring to. Caddies, and Player’s in a group will always stand in front of the golfer who is playing. Why? It’s because the peripheral vision of the player will pick up those standing behind. Occasionally, a cameraman will be too close behind a player and the player will ask that he either move back or move sideways.

Etiquette #3.

Unless Your Skin Is On The Line, tap that 2 footer into the hole. Waiting until your playing pards finish will only add valuable minutes to your round and those behind you. The same goes for hitting shots into greens. Play ready golf already!

Etiquette #4:

Stopping For Food At The Turn: This really rubs my Fur the wrong way. The group in front is two holes behind. We finally arrive at the 9th green and they are inside buying food that will eventually kill them. Or at least we hope it does, and quickly. Out they come with their stuff and off they go. Mustard and Ketchup flying all over the cart path. We arrive at #10 and the fairway is wide open, and they haven’t hit their tee shots yet. We are sitting behind them while they munch away on their lunch while guzzling Lite Beer. They still do not seem to know, or care, that they are now behind, not one, but two holes!

The PGA and other Golf entities profess to do everything that possibly can to grow the game. However, with the exception of a very few courses that I know of, I’ve found that all that seems to be the real priority is to get more golfers to play regardless of the Slow Play Rule.

Here’s why Slow Play and the lack of proper Etiquette is not enforced:

The economy has, indeed, taken a great toll on golf course income and I understand the economies of a golf course. Golf Course operators don’t wish to offend, inconvenience, or upset a customer by enforcing the Slow Play Rule. They want and need customers to return and that is priority Number One!

Many courses are trying to increase income by charging higher rates. That is backfiring since they are losing more players than ever before. My polls tell me that player’s want lower rates which will result in more play. $40 to $50 to pay a Muni is absurd. As is the bundling of Golf/Cart.

It would be a good idea if new golfers were required to take a test on Etiquette before they were allowed on a golf course. It would be a good idea if the Starter asked about a player’s playing ability and recommended a tee box to play from that would make their rounds and others playing and waiting behind them more enjoyable.

I welcome Golf Course operators who have comments and suggestions: Simply email me and I’ll publish those comments in the July Issue! Email me at: ccgolf@comcast.net.

Golfsmith, Country’s Largest Golf Retailer, Gives Customers 50,000 Rounds And Reasons To Get Back On The Links.

The economy, weather and several other factors have reduced the number of rounds of golf played by golfers in America in the past year and a half. In an effort to reverse this trend and make golf more affordable than ever, America’s largest golf retailer, Golfsmith, is partnering with more than 70 golf courses from coast to coast to launch "Free Golf Month" in the largest golf game giveaway ever. Some 50,000 rounds of golf are being given to the retailer’s customers to get more golfers back on the greens.

“We’re making golf very affordable” said Marty Hanaka, Golfsmith CEO. “Despite the challenging economic climate we are giving our customers exactly what they want, the opportunity to play more golf. With our “Free Golf Month” promotion we’re now providing our customers a free pass and access to our network of great courses throughout the country while setting ourselves apart from the competition.”

According to the National Golf Foundation (NGF), more than 518 million rounds of golf were played in 2000 while 2009 data revealed only 486 million rounds played. The average number of rounds played in the US has gone down, remained flat or increased less than one percent in the past decade. This downward trend continues, according to the NGF. Rounds of golf played are down 12.4 percent in the first three months of this year as compared to the same period in 2009.

The promotion is a win-win for customers because it is providing a free golf game valued at up to $100 with an in-store purchase of $99 while it will also benefit golf courses to attract new golfers to their courses. The average free round is around $45 to $50.

Upon the transaction of $99 or more at any of Golfsmith’s 75 stores across the country, consumers will receive a voucher from a local course to play for free at one of the participating local courses. Quantities vary by store and are on a first come, first served basis only. For full details visit your local Golfsmith store.

‘Tom Watson - Lessons Of A Lifetime’ Instructional Two-DVD Set Hits Market Aoril 26th.

World Golf Hall of Famer and 8 time major championship winner, Tom Watson, and Tom Watson Productions announced today the release of a 2010 comprehensive golf instructional two-DVD set titled 'Tom Watson - Lessons of a Lifetime'.

Tom_Watson.JPGThe two-DVD set containing close to three hours of golf instruction and an accompanying booklet of 44 lessons was filmed at The Greenbrier Resort, where Watson is Golf Professional Emeritus. This instructional program is the ultimate learning experience, covering all facets of the game-from the grip to full shots, to chipping, putting and the secret of his timeless swing, plus specialty shots including those required in strong wind conditions.

Directed by award-winning Terry Jastrow, 'Lessons of a Lifetime' embodies the practical experiences and competitive winning strategies that have earned Watson professional recognition as one of the greatest players of all time. "Tom Watson applies the same sense of determination and purpose in his new DVD instructional set," says Jastrow, "as he has to his competitive golf game. It's fifty years of experience from one of the game's masters."

Watson ranks 6th on the list of total major championship victories with more wins than Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Phil Mickelson. Watson is one of only fourteen players to have won at least three of the four golfing major titles.

Encyclopedic in its skill and strategy coverage, 'Lessons of a Lifetime' is a defining instructional medium and will be a must for beginning golfers and weekend warriors as well as experienced golfers wanting to step up their game. Watson says, "It's very important that golfers-whether they are beginners or have played for 50 years-learn and understand the fundamentals. These are the building blocks every golfer needs to have in order to play up to their potential but, more importantly, to have fun."

From playing in the wind, to hooking and slicing, to fearless putting, Watson breaks them down in an easy-to-understand manner. Golfers can begin applying these lessons of a lifetime the next time they stand on the first tee with their friends. Watson teaches his lessons of his lifetime as if golfers are there with him.

"I was fortunate to have received excellent instruction early in my life," says Watson, a Kansas City, Missouri native who shows no signs of slowing down. "When I was 6 years old, my father, Ray Watson, cut down a hickory-shafted 5-iron, then proceeded to teach me the grip, and how to hook and slice the ball-all the basic fundamentals of the game. It's all this knowledge I've accumulated that I'd like to share with golfers in 'Lessons of a Lifetime.' "

Consistency, contact, alignment, firmness of grip, pivot points, release, rhythm and legendary coach, Harvey Penick's "dead-aim" philosophy are all covered in the two comprehensive DVDs. Watson's instruction comes across in an easy-to-understand manner making it seem your standing right beside him on the tee or green.

Watson, a graduate of Stanford University, was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988 and owns 39 PGA TOUR victories, including five British Opens, two Masters and one U.S. Open. The latter victory was keyed by Watson's 71st-hole birdie chip-in at Pebble Beach, a shot many historians consider to be the shot of the 20th century.

Last year Watson pulled off one of sports history’s most-memorable moments when he made an incredible bid for his sixth Open Championship title, taking Stewart Cink to a four-hole playoff at Turnberry. Four of Watson’s seven top-10 finishes on the 2009 Champions Tour came in major championships.

This year Watson opened his season by teaming with Jack Nicklaus to win the Wendy's Champions Skins Game. The following week, Watson birdied the final two holes for a 7-under 65 and a one-stroke victory over Champions Tour rookie sensation Fred Couples in the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship.

Watson has long-standing professional relationships with Adams Golf, Golf Digest, The Greenbrier Resort, MasterCard and Polo Ralph Lauren.

The two-DVD set finishes with a moving tribute to Watson's 'caddie for life', Bruce Edwards, who passed away in April 2004 from ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease. The tribute concludes with a song written and composed by Watson's stepdaughter, Kelly Paige. A portion of the sales of 'Lessons of a Lifetime' will go to help find a cure for this dreaded, life-ending disease.

The Tom Watson 'Lessons of a Lifetime' DVD set is now available for $49.95 at select golf and sporting goods retailers, pro shops and on-line at www.tomwatsondvd.com. The set is also available to purchase by telephone at 1-800-993-5589.

"Avid golfers will benefit from the exceptional performance in the new Cobra S2 Drivers and Fairway Metals," says Brian Zender, General Manager of Cobra Golf. "They feature technologies that promote improved distance, with proprietary face design and adjustability to increase accuracy and forgiveness. Cobra S2 Drivers are designed for players of all abilities to maximize their distance off the tee and find the fairway more often. From there the Cobra S2 Fairways deliver outstanding launch and trajectory and produce high and long shots from the fairway and rough. The Cobra S2 Driver and the ZL Driver, representing our 2010 Driver line, were both selected for the Gold Award in the 2010 Golf Digest Hot List."

Cobra S2 Driver

The new Cobra S2 Driver offers superior performance in a great-looking package. Its traditional profile and rich, black Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) finish inspire confidence at address. Golfers of all abilities will appreciate its superior playability, performance, feel and aesthetics.

"We went to great lengths with the Cobra S2 Drivers to ensure that they appeal to avid golfers of all abilities who seek superior distance, forgiveness and accuracy with ball flight optimization," says Tom Preece, Vice President of Research & Development for Cobra Golf. "The 9 Point Face Technology is designed to allow more shots hit across the clubface to perform as if they were struck in the center of the clubface. Adjustable Flight Technology enables golfers to quickly and easily optimize the ball flight they want via one of three face angle settings, which in turn helps them improve their accuracy and distance. In addition, the Cobra S2 driver features a highly engineered 460cc 6-4 titanium clubhead, which not only effectively transfers energy efficiently to the ball, but is designed to produce the best sound and feel in any titanium driver we've ever produced.”

9 Point Face Technology:

With a thin Milled Rhombus Face insert surrounded by an even thinner titanium perimeter, Cobra engineered 9 Point Face Technology to generate increased ball speed across the clubface.

Adjustable Flight Technology (AFT):

Three simple face-angle settings (Open, Neutral and Closed) allow golfers to optimize trajectory for increased distance and produce straighter ball flight for improved accuracy.

Highly Engineered Head Structure:

The new, more-traditional head shape maximizes energy transfer while making drives sound as good as they look.

The Cobra S2 Driver ($375 SRP) is available in lofts of 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 degrees, with the new high performance Fujikura Fit-on Max graphite shaft and a Golf Pride grip. It will ship to golf retailers the first week in February.

Cobra S2 Offset Driver

The new Cobra S2 Offset Driver offers golfers the outstanding performance of the Cobra S2 Driver in a maximum draw-biased design. This 460cc 6-4 titanium driver is geared toward mid- and high-handicap golfers who are looking for maximum forgiveness and a high-launch, draw-biased (anti-slice) ball flight that yields superior distance.

9 Point Face Technology:

With a thin Milled Rhombus Face insert surrounded by an even thinner titanium perimeter, Cobra engineered 9 Point Face Technology to generate increased ball speed across the clubface.

Offset Design:

The offset head design offers maximum draw bias (anti-slice), promoting a square face at impact for longer, more consistent drives.

The Cobra S2 Offset Driver ($325 SRP) is available in lofts of 9.5, 10.5 and 11.5 degrees, with the new high performance Fujikura Fit-on Max graphite shaft and a Golf Pride grip. It will ship to golf retailers the first week in February.

Cobra S2 Fairways

The new Cobra S2 Fairways appeal to all avid golfers looking for maximum forgiveness and distance from the fairway. Made of 17-4 stainless steel, their thin clubface yields consistent distance even on off-center hits, while the sole is contoured to promote improved contact with the ball, and thus improves forgiveness.

Thin, Hot Face Design:

A thin, hot face maximizes ball speed across the clubface for more consistent distance.

Progressive Sole Design:

A progressive sole design throughout the set provides superior turf interaction, making it easier to hit solid shots from the fairway and the rough.

The Cobra S2 Fairways ($185 SRP) are available in 3-, 5- and 7-woods, with Fujikura Fit-on Max graphite shafts and Golf Pride grips. They are also offered in offset versions, and will ship to golf retailers the first week in February.

Tag Heuer 27°Air Eyewear Introduces “Intensive” High-Definition Sunglass Lens Technology.

27____air_VermillionHD.jpg

TAG Heuer Eyewear introduces “Intensive” HD sunglass lens technology, designed to enhance on-land activities from casual outdoor enjoyment to professional athletic competition. The vermillion-colored “Intensive” HD lenses are the first to combine photochromic darkening ability with re-engineered, gradient “silver flash” technology – creating non-mirrored lenses that become reflective as they darken.

The result: high-definition sunglasses that enhance dimensional detail of the landscape vs. the flattening effect of polarized lenses. This new Intensive HD lens technology is appropriate for those times when a truer image is crucial – such as when riding a motorcycle or lining up a putt. This makes them ideal for many outdoor, land-based activities such as bicycling and motorcycling, golf, tennis, softball, hiking and days at the park.

TAG Heuer Eyewear’s Intensive HD lenses provide the optimal blend of contrast and light transmission from dawn to dusk. In low light, lenses are translucent and eyes are clearly visible; within two minutes of exposure to bright sun, lenses become dark, shiny and reflective. The lightweight polycarbonate lenses offer UV-A and UV-B protection.

“For years, water sports fans have worn polarized lenses to eliminate glare, which is quite effective on water or ice but not especially adapted for other outdoor activities,” explains TAG Heuer Eyewear executive Guillaume Pottecher. “TAG Heuer Eyewear’s Intensive HD lenses were purpose-designed to improve vision and eye comfort when taking part in land-based sports. We tested Intensive HD lenses with a variety of professional athletes, including top golfers, and their feedback was beyond expectation.”

There are three key reasons behind Intensive HD’s suitability for the most demanding land-based activities:
1. The photochromic lenses automatically darken and lighten according to brightness levels.
2. The vermillion color contrasts against blue and green, providing excellent perception in low light and protection in bright sun.
3. The highly reflective silver flash greatly reduces the amount of light that reaches the eyes.

Further, TAG Heuer Eyewear developed a unique silver flash technology for this lens to offer improved visual acuity – by allowing photochromic tint to react to UV and maintain the natural relationship of colors to each other.

Intensive HD sunglass lenses are available in a variety of TAG Heuer Eyewear styles, with price points ranging from $310 to $420 (MSRP). Available exclusively at authorized TAG Heuer authorized retailers. See them at www.tagheuer.com.

Cleveland® Golf Introduces The Ultimate Wedge.

ClevelandPutter.jpgClevelandCG15Wedge.jpg

Cleveland® Golf/Srixon® is pleased to announce the introduction of the ultimate wedge to their wedge family, the CG15TM. The new CG15TM combines classic wedge design with advanced manufacturing technology. Adding to our breakthrough ZIP GROOVESTM technology, the CG15TM features a revolutionary surface roughness technology – called LASER MILLEDTM.

Laser MilledTM Face – Cleveland® Golf’s precision surface roughness technology. Using the precision of a laser, four perfectly calibrated texture lines are Laser MilledTM between each groove. The result is a clubface featuring a perfectly consistent surface texture – right to the conforming limit. This breakthrough surface roughness application allows for optimal ball-to-clubface friction and maximizes spin under the Rules of Golf.

Zip GroovesTM The breakthrough, envelope-stretching geometry from Cleveland® Golf. This patented technology features consistent milling of each groove to maximum conforming dimensions. The CNC machine form cutter bit is designed to the exact shape of the groove – creating grooves and edge radii with total precision. The absolute integrity of these grooves is maintained through the application of a proprietary coating to each groove for protection during the sandblasting process. Players are assured that groove volume is optimized to channel more debris at impact than traditional grooves. More spin is generated by this improved ball-to-clubface contact and this results in more consistent shot-making.

S Sole Grind – A 3-segment sole feature designed to increase versatility on all shots around the green. The wider sole width on the heel section improves forgiveness on open-faced shots by reducing digging – which is especially beneficial on bunker shots. The center section has a standard sole width for traditional Cleveland® wedge performance on square-faced shots. The toe section of the sole has material removed to reduced turf interaction and drag. This combination optimizes contact and sole function on all conceivable shots around the green.

Tour designed shape and offset – like every Cleveland® Golf wedge, the CG15TM shape is tour scrutinized to ensure the best possible address view and functionality. Players will notice that the CG15TM shape profile is a fraction smaller than previous Cleveland® wedge models. The smaller shape reduces turf interference, and the hint of offset encourages spin by promoting a downward strike. The face is slightly thicker to improve feel, and the S-sole is designed for improved versatility around the greens.

3-Bounce Fitting System - The CG15TM continues Cleveland® Golf’s tradition of offering the most comprehensive selection of bounce and loft options to players of all skill levels. The Low, Standard, and High Bounce options are clearly displayed with the same 3 dot system used on all series wedges (1 dot = Low Bounce, 2 dots = Std Bounce, 3 dots = High Bounce). In addition, the bounce value (measured in degrees) is engraved on each sole providing players with even more information to help the selection and fitting process.

Traction Wedge Shaft - Engineered from Tip to Grip to improve feel and spin performance, the stiffness profile of Cleveland® Golf’s TRACTION shaft reacts to the flex demands of any wedge shot. The tip section is slightly softer – improving feel and responsiveness. Stiffness was increased in the mid and butt sections of the shaft to assure optimal launch conditions and consistency on full shots. The combination consistently delivers the wedge head to the ball with a release that assures optimal “Traction” and spin performance on scoring shots.

The CG15TMDSG couples all the features of the CG15TM wedge with a unique Dynamic Sole Grind (DSG) which enables players of all levels to open the clubface more easily at address. The CG15TMDSG wedge allows square-faced shots to play like a standard bounce wedge. The leading portion of the sole is narrow with a high bounce angle, while the trailing edge sole grind provides low bounce performance on open-faced shots due to its lower leading edge. This combination of sole features allows players to hit high and soft touch shots with ease.

Cleveland® Golf’s CG15TM wedges begin shipping immediately and will be listed at the minimum advertised price (MAP) of $119. The CG15TM is available in chrome, Black Pearl and Oil Quench finishes, while the CG15TMDSG is only offered in the Oil Quench finish. High resolution images of the new CG15TM and CG15TMDSG wedges are available to download from the media section at www.clevelandgolf.com. Please call customer service for the user name and password.

EIDOLON_V_SOLE_60_Lob.jpg

Eidolon Gives Golfers A New Way To Buy Wedges

EIDOLON Golf—manufacturer of the highly acclaimed, technologically innovative V-SOLE® Wedges—has unveiled an exciting new consumer-friendly website, www.BestWedge.com.

The sleek website features a Free Downloads page, About Eidolon page, The V-SOLE Wedges page, EIDOLON For YOU page, Shop Now page, Trade Partners page and a Contact Us page.

"Our new website includes a comprehensive range of information on EIDOLON Golf, and wedges in general," says industry veteran Terry Koehler, President of EIDOLON. "The website also allows us to share the feedback we get from our enthusiastic owners, who immediately learn that our patented V-SOLE, CNC-milled faces and grooves, and premium shafts combine to deliver the results EIDOLON promises and guarantees."

The www.BestWedge.com Home page explains why EIDOLON wedges are nothing like the off-the-rack selection from Titleist®, Cleveland® and the other wedge brands sold in stores, and how EIDOLON backs each one with their exclusive No Risk Guarantee. Instead of a mind-boggling array of specialized bounce angles, EIDOLON's patented V-SOLE can handle any kind of lie golfers might encounter. As opposed to a steel shaft that's too heavy and too stiff (who says one size fits all?), EIDOLON offers premium steel and graphite shafts in a range of flexes to ensure optimum feel and performance. Most importantly, EIDOLON wedges are custom built for each golfer who's going to play them.

In a total departure from all other golf equipment sites, the EIDOLON WedgeFit™ process begins by understanding what kind of golf game each golfer has. Golfers are urged to click on the "EIDOLON For YOU" feature and choose the category that best describes his or her game, and learn how EIDOLON is doing more than any other wedge brand to improve each golfer's game.

The website's other features include:

Free Downloads: Consumers have the opportunity to learn about EIDOLON wedges, and wedges in general via free downloads of ebooks and information such as "All About Wedges," "EIDOLON V-SOLE Wedge Owners Manual" and "The Spin Zone: The Real Truth About Grooves."

About Eidolon: This area familiarizes consumers with the company. "Who Are We?" explains why EIDOLON offers a very different, much more advanced wedge-buying experience than the major brands. "How Do We Compare?" discusses the advantage of EIDOLON wedges over one-size-fits-all wedges purchased off the rack. This section also includes a chart with five categories (sole/bounce, grooves, shaft, custom alterations and satisfaction guarantee) compared to five major wedge manufacturers (Titleist®, Vokey®, Cleveland®, Ping®, Callaway® and TaylorMade®). "What EIDOLON Owners Are Saying" contains comments from golfers who decided to trust their short games to EIDOLON wedges. "Meet The President" features a five-section interview with President Terry Koehler's, where they can understand his impressive golf-industry career, thoughts on starting a new company and philosophies about wedge play.

The V-Sole Wedges: Each of EIDOLON's versatile V-SOLE Wedges are discussed in detail-the 48-degree pitching wedge, 52-degree gap wedge, 56-degree sand wedge and 60-degree lob wedge. The pitching wedge gives golfers true pitching-wedge distance, and is perfect for chipping and knock-down shots. This scoring tool can be altered to any loft from 47-50 degrees to ensure the right set match. The gap wedge-which can be altered to lofts from 51-54 degrees-can be hooded down for pitch and runs without the leading edge digging in or laid open for easier long bunker shots. Unlike other wedge brands which feature wedges with either a very specialized high or low bounce, EIDOLON's sand wedge's V-SOLE technology ensures handling a tight lie by a cart path as deftly as a fluffy bunker shot, with unbeatable EIDOLON spin thanks to its CNC-milled face and grooves. It can be altered to lofts from 55-58 degrees. The easiest-to-master lob wedge ever is a great short-range bunker club, and perfect for delicate pitches and chips where more spin and height is needed. It can be altered from 59-62 degrees. Each wedge retails for $129 (chrome finish); $139 (PRIME finish).

"We've raised the bar on custom-built wedges to a level other brands don't approach," Koehler proudly says. "And the result is that every EIDOLON golfer gets a precision set of scoring tools that will cut strokes from their scores from the very first round. We guarantee that."

Eidolon For You: Segments consumers into six golf profiles-Better Players, Mid-Handicappers, Avid 18+, Seniors, Ladies and Juniors - and shows them how EIDOLON is doing more than any other wedge brand to improve their games-and why less than 1 out of 100 EIDOLON customers have ever returned their wedges under the company's No-Risk Guarantee.

Shop Now: This streamlined, full custom-specifications purchase process (screenshot) enables consumers to choose a wedge or build a set, then Select Your Specifications from RH or LH, premium steel or graphite shaft in five shaft-flex options (firm, regular, seniors, ladies, juniors), finish (chrome or PRIME) and free custom alterations (alterations to shaft length, lie angle, grip size or lofts).

Trade Partners: This section facilitates interactive ordering by golf professionals, better off-course retail stores and commercially engaged independent clubfitter/builders.

Contact US: Consumers are encouraged to contact EIDOLON with questions about the company's wedges, or wedges in general.

"EIDOLON has an innovative and important story to tell to consumers, and our new website is a great place to learn about us," Koehler says. "This is going to be a big year for wedges, with the grooves changing for 2011. But to just randomly buy one more off-the-rack wedge from a major brand is going to leave the golfer disappointed. If you're going to make the investment, make sure your wedges fit you and your game."

EIDOLON Golf was founded in 2004 by Terry Koehler and friend Ralph Thompson, who also founded Reid Lockhart Golf when Koehler left The Ben Hogan Company in 1996. Koehler, whose golf industry career dates back to 1980, has been awarded five golf club patents, in addition to being behind some creative marketing work in the club industry. EIDOLON Golf aims to change the way golfers think about their wedges, and Koehler is devoted to putting better scoring tools in their bags. Bobby Jones Golf Launches New Superlight Driver By Jesse Ortiz Golfers regain distance with game-changing technology.

They're not for everybody, but the new Workshop Edition SuperLight Series drivers designed by master craftsman Jesse Ortiz for Bobby Jones Golf are adding an average of 15 to 20 yards to the drives of good golfers whose swing speeds have now dropped into the 80s or below.

Drawing on new technology and his own passion for designing better golf clubs, Ortiz started with the award-winning Workshop Edition driver head. Its aerodynamic, triangular shape enhances the head's rotation during the swing, allowing the face to square more easily at impact and better correct off-center hits. He added the super-premium 45-gram Graphite Design YSQ Tour AD SuperLight shaft, and Winn's new 25-gram "lite" grip. Together, they reduce the total weight of the driver by 45 grams.

But Ortiz didn't stop there. The designer increased the shaft length to 47 inches, resulting in a club-head speed increase of nearly seven mph and a swing distance increase of at least 15 yards for most players. Superior performance for many, says Ortiz, boils down to physics.

"The light weight of the SuperLight Series drivers allow for greater control, even though the shaft is a full two inches over standard," Ortiz explained. "We removed no weight from the head. All the weight reduction comes from the shaft and grip areas, which allows golfers to increase club-head speed with no sacrifice in mass at the impact zone -- and with no extra effort or strength required."

Compared to standard drivers, which have 60- or 65-gram shafts with 50-gram grips, a 45-inch length and a weight of about 320 grams, the SuperLight Series drivers are featherweights. Even with the added shaft length, they weigh in at under 285 grams.

Available in stiff, regular and senior flexes, the SuperLight Series drivers will most benefit golfers who consistently hit fairways but have lost distance over the years. Although Ortiz recommends the full 47-inch shaft and cautions golfers who want to get the most out of the technology to stay at 46 inches or above, Bobby Jones Golf will, however, make the driver any length the customer desires.

"I have demonstrated the SuperLight Series drivers at events nationwide, and the results are always the same. Golfers consistently gain yardage, starting from the first few shots," stated Ortiz. "Drivers today all go about the same distance. The only way to increase distance under the USGA rules is to increase club-head speed and increase the arc or distance the club-head travels during the swing. Bobby Jones Golf's new SuperLight technology addresses those two points in a way we haven't seen since the advent of the first graphite shafts nearly four decades ago."
